Unpacking the EU Electrification Action Plan: heat pumps as flexibility assets
Both European and Chinese companies make heat pumps and components.

But what do upcoming rules requiring clean tech to be made in Europe mean for Chinese players?

EHPA boss Paul Kenny and president Patrick Crombez visited the Chinese heat pump forum in Wuhan last week.

They chatted about the mood in the room, the market globally and the implications of EU policy on China's heat pump sector.
Can China and Europe avoid a trade war on heat pumps?
Heat pumps save energy, cut emissions and can reduce household heating bills by up to 60%.

Yet for many households, the upfront investment is too much.

The European Commission's Electrification Action Plan tackles this challenge head-on, proposing a range of measures to make heat pumps and other electrification technologies more affordable.
Unpacking the EU Electrification Action Plan: Tackling upfront costs
Electricity is still more expensive than fossil gas in most of Europe, slowing down electrification and the uptake of heat pumps.

The European Commission's Electrification Action Plan aims to change that by reforming electricity bills, rebalancing taxes and network charges, and phasing out fossil fuel subsidies.

Here's how these measures could make clean heating and industrial electrification the more affordable choice.

This summer, we've been thinking a lot about staying cool. By December, it'll be all about heating again - heat pumps do both. ❄️🔥

Join us at the Heat Pump Forum 2026 as we explore it all.

Heat pumps are at the centre of the EU's plan to electrify its energy.

The electrification action plan from the European Commission focuses on the electrification of demand.

It takes up several key measures EHPA has long supported to boost demand for heat pumps, aiming for 4 million installed per year by 2030.
What's in the EU electrification action plan (and what does Jozefien think)?
As Europe's first heatwave of 2026 heads east, let's remember that heat pumps can both cool and heat.

Because they are so efficient and can be used all year round, they save you energy and CO2 emissions.

In its upcoming Electrification Action Plan, the European Commission should put in place measures to make heat pumps and electrification the affordable, competitive choice.

HP SUBSCRIBE is an EU-funded LIFE project accelerating the transition to clean heating in rented commercial and public buildings through an innovative Heat Pump on Subscription (HPoS) model.

By removing upfront investment barriers and addressing the landlord-tenant split incentive, HPoS makes high-performance heat pumps accessible, affordable, and hassle-free.

Through pilot projects in France, Austria, and Greece, and supporting market uptake in Ireland, the project will also identify the regulatory, financial, and market conditions needed to replicate and scale the approach across Europe. By demonstrating how subscription-based solutions can replace fossil fuel heating systems, reduce emissions, and unlock innovative financing mechanisms, HP SUBSCRIBE paves the way for a more sustainable and accessible energy future.

On a boiling June day, a discussion on using waste heat could not have felt more appropriate.

However, the heat being addressed at this webinar was not weather-related, but from industrial and other processes.

Either it can be turned into electricity through a process called ‘organic rankine cycle’ (ORC) or into higher temperature heat via industrial heat pumps.

While there is still huge potential, waste heat recovery is already gathering momentum.

The 'No Warmth Wasted' webinar is part of EHPA's Heat BIG series, bringing potential end users together with large heat pump players to learn more.
No warmth wasted! How industries can capture & re-use heat
Europe now has 29.3 million residential heat pumps installed!

These are saving us billions of Euros on avoided gas imports.

But there's a big gap between Finland - where over 50% of households have a heat pump, and Slovakia, where it's around 4%.

There is huge potential for growth - and we can see sales growth is triggered by government action on affordability and stable heat pump support schemes.

The EU's upcoming Electrification Action Plan will be key for speeding this up, starting with bringing about lower taxes on electricity & heat pumps.

What if buildings could store energy when demand is low, and use it when it matters most?

That’s exactly what BEST-Storage is working on: developing and demonstrating innovative thermal energy storage solutions to reduce peak loads, save energy and cut costs in buildings.

From seasonal thermo-chemical storage to phase change materials and vacuum-insulated water storage, the project is testing solutions across 4 demo cases in Europe.

How can industrial heat pumps help decarbonise one of Europe’s most energy-intensive food sectors?

This webinar, part of the Heat BIG series – implementing industrial and district heat pump solutions, will focus on the role of industrial heat pumps in the dairy sector. From milk processing to cheese production, dairy facilities require significant amounts of heat, making them a strong candidate for large scale heat pump solutions.

The session will present the latest outlook for the industrial heat pump sector, introduce the BETTED project, and explore the market evolution and potential of industrial heat pumps with a dedicated focus on dairy applications. The industrial heat pump analysis presented during the webinar was performed in the framework of the SPIRIT project, which is demonstrating two industrial heat pump applications in the food and beverage sector.

Through a series of case studies, participants will know more on how industrial heat pumps can be integrated into dairy processes, supporting energy efficiency, emissions reduction and the transition away from fossil-based heat.

What have we learned from WaterWarmth – and what comes next for aquathermal energy (AE)? Join our final webinar to explore key lessons from the project, real-life insights from pilot cases, and future pathways to scale AE solutions. Building on the previous sessions, this webinar will highlight practical experiences, success factors, and remaining challenges, while introducing long-term visions and strategies to support wider deployment of aquathermal energy across Europe.

WHY ATTEND?

Turning aquathermal energy into a scalable solution requires both practical experience and a clear long-term vision. This webinar brings together lessons from pilot projects and strategic insights on governance, planning, and scaling.

Whether you’re developing projects, shaping policy, or investing in clean energy, you’ll gain practical takeaways to move from local initiatives to broader deployment.

The Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat just released a new video in collaboration with CEISLAB, offering an inside look at the Heat Pump KEYMARK certification process and the role of independent testing laboratories in ensuring quality, transparency and trust across the European heat pump market.

Filmed at CEISLAB’s facilities in Madrid, the video takes viewers behind the scenes of the certification journey, showcasing the close cooperation between the Heat Pump KEYMARK Secretariat, certification bodies and recognised testing laboratories.

Through interviews with representatives from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) and experts from CEISLAB, the video explores how independent third-party testing supports one of Europe’s most trusted voluntary certification schemes for heat pumps.
